Job Posting: Politics and Government Editor

Job description: With a battle over who won the U.S. Senate seat verging on eight months, a wide-open race for governor already heating up for 2010 and a current governor many believe is testing a run for president, Minnesota is a fascinating place to cover politics and government. The Star Tribune in Minneapolis is looking for an editor to lead its team of reporters covering state government and the state’s Washington delegation for both the printed newspaper and online.

This editor would be responsible for planning and coordinating daily and long-term coverage of politics and government, from the legislative session in the Capitol in St. Paul to the potential impact of that lawmaking on citizens in communities across the state, to political campaigns. It requires collaboration with editors throughout the newsroom, as well as a zeal for conveying and covering political news on many different platforms – from print to online to mobile to social networking media. The job requires deep experience in covering and/or directing political coverage. It requires the ability to sort through the myriad possibilities for political coverage and set priorities. This editor must be able to coach reporters through the process from idea creation to reporting to writing, and provide skilled line editing that polishes the finished story to its highest potential, whether it is a daily bright, an enterprising Sunday story or a project.

Qualifications: This job requires significant experience covering or directing coverage of politics and government. Openness to collaborative editing processes is important, as is the ability to communicate well and work collegially with other editors and with the staff of reporters covering politics and government. This editor must be able to inspire his or her staff to continually reinvent coverage of politics and government, taking advantage of the intersection of politics and new technology, watching for trends in how the public is reacting to politics and government, and fully exploring that through coverage. This editor needs to lead coverage in a way that sparks fascinating story ideas and be able to coach the staff through deeply reporting and writing in a way that results in stories captivating to average citizens, government workers and political junkies. Bachelor’s Degree required.

Action: Please submit a letter outlining your ideas about leading coverage of politics and government, a resume and examples of your work to Kate Parry, assistant managing editor, enterprise/investigations, Star Tribune, 425 Portland Ave., Minneapolis, MN, 55488 or kparry@startribune.com .

Application deadline:  Monday, June 22, 2009
