Community College Fellowship

February 27, 2008

The following comes by way of Kevin Corcoran at the Lumina Foundation:

You are invited to apply for a terrific opportunity to gain support, encouragement and resources for substantive reporting on the nation’s 12,000 community colleges. Nearly half of all U.S. undergraduates are enrolled in these two-year institutions. The fellowship, “Covering Community Colleges – A Fellowship,” is competitive and will be awarded to six American journalists. The fellowship is offered by the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media, Teachers College, Columbia University, and enjoys support from Lumina Foundation on Education and other foundations. Community colleges, often overlooked in coverage, are becoming increasingly prominent as educators and policymakers try to address issues related to the technical skills of the workforce, educational equity, low-quality high school education, immigration, language and poverty. Fellows receive stipends and are admitted based on a proposal to carry out a significant piece of reporting on a community college issue. The pieces will be completed after a week-long intensive residency in NYC, interviews with experts and mentoring by a veteran journalist. Apply by April 30.
