2009 Elections

June 15, 2009

Dear Capitolbeat members:

We will have at least seven board seats up for election this year. Those elections take place in conjunction with the conference and we’ll be sending out more information later in the summer about how to cast your vote.

Today, I’m writing to ask you to consider serving on the board. As a board member, you help make our annual contest and conference a reality and you get to help shape the future of the organization. You can lend your talents in dozens of ways, such as by helping us publicize our events and contests, recruiting panelists for conferences or recruiting new members.

Yes, there’s a lot of work involved. And no, you won’t win fame or fortune. But you may just help save (or at least improve) statehouse journalism.

Attached is a statement of intent (Click here to download) that all those who think they might be interested in running should read over. Speaking from personal experience, it is worth having a conversation with your supervisors before deciding to make this kind of commitment.

If you would like more information about what it’s like to be a board member, contact any one of the sitting members.

Should you decide to run, please print, sign and mail me the attached statement of intent. No candidate may run for a board seat unless we have this in hand by the time of the election. The address where you may mail your statement of intent is:

Capitolbeat
c/o Mark Binker
1709 Chadstone Court
Raleigh, NC 27615

And we need to know that you are a candidate NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, JULY 9. That’s roughly in one month and is a deadline set by our bylaws. Please e-mail me with information that you’re planning to run and mail your statement of intent separately.

One more note about this year’s election: Long-time board member Alan Johnson has been serving on an emergency basis as both Secretary and Treasurer. We’re going to get him down to just one job, and Alan has said he would like to remain as Treasurer. The board plans to fill the secretary’s slot before the conference, mostly likely with one of its current or former members.

We plan to put both the Secretary and Treasurer’s slot on the ballot, primarily as a way of notifying the greatest number of members about the change in leadership positions. However – if you have an interest in running for one of those slots, please fill out the statement of intent and let me know by the July 9 deadline.

Thanks for your attention.
